Information about BRAGA Braga is situated in Northern Portugal less than an hour from Porto, and is the second largest city in Portugal. With approximately 150,000 people, Braga is the religious centre of Portugal. Founded by the Celts in 300 B.C. and a Roman administrative centre in 27 B.C., Bracara Augusta, as the Romans named it, combines religious importance with today’s commercial and industrial prosperity. The city is also known as the "Portuguese Rome" for its concentration of religious architecture. In Portugal, Braga's population is considered the most conservative, and by some the most pious, by others the most fanatic. The city is one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal. The best time of the year to visit Braga is during the Holy Week, when Braga reaches its zenith of pomp and majesty. Many popular processions fill the town’s streets. The most popular is the Procession of Our Lord Ecce Homo", the most unique is the "Thephorical Procession" and the most imposing is the "Procession of the Burial of Our Lord".To visit: the Cathedral (12th-18th Centuries), the treasury and Sacred Art Museum; the museum at the Biscainhos Palace; and the Dom Diogo de Sousa Museum. Also deserving to be visited are the churches of Misericórdia (Renaissance), Pópulo (17th-18th centuries) and of Nossa Senhora Branca (18th century). On the outskirts, 2.5 miles away from the centre, stands the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro; the ancient monastery of Tibães, dating back to the Suevian period and rebuilt in the 11th Century, and the Church of São Frutuoso de Montélios (a 7th-century Visigothic temple). Not far from the city centre, there are three important sanctuaries: The "Bom Jesus" the "Sameiro" and the "Santa Marta da Falperra”. If you want to taste the local cuisine, don’t miss the many variations of the Bacalhau (dried Cod) offered in the local restaurants. Other local specialties are the "Papas de Sarrabulho" (pig’s blood with maize) and "Rojões de proco" (dumplings made of pork and maize). This region’s wine are also famous. The "Vinho Verde" (a white or red wine, slightly acidulous) is ideal for accompanying local dishes.
